Two words often begin sentences in our everyday speech culture: \u201cThey say . . . \u201c Who are \u201cthey\u201d exactly? Is there some secret committee out there that forms opinions and feels superior enough in their wisdom to impart it upon all mankind?<\/p>\n
\u201cThey say you shouldn\u2019t go outside with a wet head.\u201d<\/em> The list is endless for what \u201cthey\u201d seem to be saying in our lives.<\/p>\n Far too often I have based decisions on what others have said. Yes, we should listen to godly wise counsel and, certainly, gathering others\u2019 opinions can be beneficial. But I am wondering about the choices I make from day to day that may be based on the \u201cthey say\u201d of life versus the \u201cwhat He says.\u201d<\/p>\n I believe that God\u2019s Word is a lamp to my feet. This belief is based not only in faith, but upon evidences where His Word has proven so very trustworthy in guiding me. \n\u201cThey say not to swim for thirty minutes after you eat.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say an apple a day keeps the doctor away.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say never trust a skinny chef.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say true love hides behind every corner.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say the best things in life are worth waiting for.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say always follow your heart.\u201d<\/em>
\n\u201cThey say it\u2019s the little things in life that matter the most.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
\nO Lord, according to Your word.<\/strong>
\nTeach me good discernment and knowledge,<\/strong>
\nFor I believe in Your commandments.<\/strong>
\nBefore I was afflicted I went astray,<\/strong>
\nBut now I keep Your word.<\/strong>
\nYou are good and do good;<\/strong>
\nTeach me Your statutes.<\/strong>
\nThe arrogant have forged a lie against me;<\/strong>
\nWith all my heart I will observe Your precepts.<\/strong>
\nTheir heart is covered with fat,<\/strong>
\nBut I delight in Your law.<\/strong>
\nIt is good for me that I was afflicted,<\/strong>
\nThat I may learn Your statutes.<\/strong>
\nThe law of Your mouth is better to me<\/strong>
\nThan thousands of gold and silver pieces (<\/strong>Psalm 119:65-72).<\/strong>
\n<\/em>
\nThe psalmist has seen the difference between man and God. He has tasted the good and perfect law of His heavenly Father and no longer seeks the wisdom of man. Through his affliction, he has grown deeper in his trust of the Word and its truths. As followers of Christ Jesus, let us refrain from ever seeking the value of man\u2019s opinion over the powerful Word of God. The next time someone starts a sentence with, \u201cThey say\u201d let our first thought be, \u201cBut what does He say?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
