Sometimes when less-than-perfect results are achieved we say we would like a “do-over.” A chance to get it right or to erase regret is so appealing when we know we could’ve and should’ve done something better. There have been so many moments in my life where I wish I had been given a “do over.” But I look back on all of these events, big and small, and I recognize that the Lord is using each and every mistake. My failures, my losses, my weaknesses, and my sins are all tools in His hands. My Heavenly Father is molding me into the likeness of His Son through my own personal muck and mire! This is unbelievably encouraging to my frail and feeble heart.
In fact, a do-over suddenly seems unnecessary. He has defeated my sin. He has covered my shame. He has redeemed my life out of the pit of death and darkness and damnation. So with each earthly misstep until that final fall to my knees at His throne, I have hope that He will use my blunders to grow me. He will heal my wounds with His very own. I entrust myself to Him who judges justly that I may learn to die to sin and live to righteousness. This is possible because of who Christ is and what He has done.
He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls (1 Peter 2:22-25).
